At the Hardwood Mall, we get excited when a customer brings us a truly unique vision. But when someone comes in wanting a desk inspired by interstellar travel and the Red Planet, we knew we had to deliver something stellar.
Our customer wanted a workspace that blended the rich, natural beauty of live-edge wood with a deep-space aesthetic: a custom epoxy pour designed to look like a rugged crater on Mars, complete with embedded space-themed figures they brought in for the build.

The Perfect Canvas: Live-Edge Sycamore
Every great custom build starts with the right slab. For this project, we selected a gorgeous piece of Sycamore. Sycamore is famous for its intricate, swirling grain patterns and warm tones—the perfect contrast for a stark, dramatic landscape.
The centerpiece of the slab featured a deep, natural void. While some might see a flaw, it was the perfect canvas to recreate a Martian crater.
We wanted to capture the dynamic, swirling dust and deep, oxidized copper-reds of the Mars surface. By layering these custom metallic colors into the epoxy, Ian achieved a look that mimics a planetary crater.
Once the custom "Mars" epoxy was formulated, we carefully positioned the customer’s space figures into the void, ensuring they were perfectly set before pouring the crystal-clear top layers.
To anchor the entire piece, we paired the finished Sycamore top with sleek, minimalist black hairpin legs and added custom under-desk drawers
